Inside the science

TMS therapy is well tolerated and has been shown to be safe in clinical studies. TMS has been FDA-cleared for the treatment of depression, but TMS therapy is not associated with the systemic side effects seen with antidepressant drugs.
To date, more than 3,000,000 patients have received over 60 million TMS treatments. The most common side effects are mild to moderate scalp discomfort and mild headache, which typically resolve after the first week of treatment.
You may feel a tapping sensation on your scalp—one patient described it as “like a woodpecker.” Your practitioner will only increase the treatment power once you’re comfortable with the magnetic pulses.
TMS therapy is covered by most insurers—including Premera Blue Cross, Regence, Cigna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Aetna, TRICARE, and VA. If your plan doesn’t currently cover TMS, your provider can check your benefits and, case-by-case, help request reimbursement.
